National Minimum Wage has been increased

The National Minimum Wage has been increased with effect from October 2016.

This affects the minimum wage of people under the age of 25. People aged 25 and above are paid at least the National Living Wage, and this will be reviewed in April. Putting these two pieces of legislation means that for the period from October 2016 to April 2017 the minimum hourly rate payable is as follows:

National Minimum Wage

  • People aged 16 & 17 £4.00 (previously £3.87)
  • People aged 18 to 20 £5.55 (previously £5.30)
  • People aged 21 to 24 £6.95 (previously £6.70)

National Living Wage

  • People aged 25 and above £7.20
  • The Apprentice rate is £3.40.

This rate applies to all apprentices in their first year of apprenticeship. It also applies to apprentices aged under 19. Apprentices aged 19 and above who have completed their first year are entitled to the rate applicable to their age.
