Firstly, we had the National Minimum Wage. Then we got the National Living Wage, meaning presumably that the law did not require employers to pay a wage that people could live on. However, both the National Living Wage and the National Minimum Wage will increase from April 2017, and hopefully this will see the end of this distinction.
Previously, the NLW was reviewed in April and the NMW operated from October in each year. From April 2017 the NMW, which was only increased in October, and the NLW will both be increased as follows:
- National Living Wage (for people 25 years old or greater) £7.50 per hour
National Minimum Wage:
- 21 – 24 year olds £7.05 per hour
- 18 – 20 year olds £5.60 per hour
- 16 – 17 year olds £4.05 per hour
- Qualifying apprentices £3.50 per hour
Let us hope that this sensible merging of these two measures continues in the future!
