Largest Tax Defaulter charged £4,300,000 in penalties

Thinking of doing a bit of work on the side? You might change your mind after reading the latest quarterly list of deliberate tax defaulters’ details that has recently been published by HMRC.

This latest listing has added 133 names to the list of those who have received penalties either for deliberate errors in tax returns or for failing to comply with tax obligations. The 133 penalties total £13.4m on a total of £21.3m tax owed. The list includes tax evaders whose penalties involve unpaid tax of more than £25,000.

The largest tax penalty on the current list amounts to £4,300,000 on £6,500,000 of tax owed over the period of June 2015 to September 2015 by Business Networks Management Limited, a computer equipment provider, although whether this is received may be open to doubt as the company was placed in liquidation in June 2016.

The second biggest penalty was paid by a haulier who paid £593,000 on £989,000 of tax owed in November 2015. The list also includes an online trader, Lulu Xu, who has a £485,000 fine on £693,000 of tax owed from December 2012 to October 2016 and a restaurant who owes £412,000 on £589,000 of unpaid tax.

The list also includes a guest house, a “Costcutter” supermarket franchisee, and a fish and chip shop.

HMRC only publishes details where the taxpayer has not made a full and immediate disclosure either before or during an investigation, and the information is made publicly available for a maximum period of 12 months.
