Transfer of Personal Allowance To Your Spouse Or Partner

A quick reminder that if you do not have enough income to use up all of your personal allowance then you may be able to transfer it to your spouse or partner. Not only can you do this for the current year but if it applied last year then it is still not too late to make a claim for 2015/16.

You can make a claim if:

  • You are married or in a civil partnership
  • Your income is below £11,000
  • Your partner’s income is between £11,001 and £43,000

If you apply to transfer your allowance then it will continue to be transferred in the future until you either cancel the election or your circumstances change.

You can make the application on-line at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/income-tax-notice-of-transfer-of-surplus-income-tax-allowances-575t

To do so then you need to be registered with HMRC through the government gateway, and this can take several weeks. Alternatively, you can apply by post using form 575(T) which is also available from the link above.
